Social Media In My Life...

Social media has been a huge part of my life since I was about 13 years old. I was born at a good time because I grew up in a time where children did not get a cell phone at 7 or 8 years old and I had to spend time not using the internet. Smart phones were not a thing except for the Blackberry phones, which only business people had, and my first phone was a flip phone that had the internet on it but you had to pay to use it. I got my first iPhone in 2012 and I have never stopped using the internet after that point. I really do miss the times when I did not have a smart phone and had to do other things than play on the internet all the time.

I use many different social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and the PlayStation Network. I use some more than others, but I would say these combined take up most of my day after school and work are done. I can sit down and scroll through twitter for about an hour or so watching short random video and catching up on the news and current events. I would say I spend about 5 to 7 hours a day on my PlayStation playing online games or on YouTube watching videos. I always wait till last minute to do all my school work and I would say that is mostly because I waste time on social media.

I have to thank social media for a lot of things that have happen in the last 6 to7 years. I have made so many friends on Twitter and Facebook that I would have never became friends with in real life. I think that online gaming as a whole has introduced me to the most friends of all and my closest friends. I have spent so many night playing video games with my friends till the sun rises in the morning and sleeping till 1 in the afternoon because of it. My friends that I have met online are my best friends even away from the video games because we have spent so much time talking while playing.

The couple hundred dollars I spend on a phone every couple years is more than worth it for the amount of use they each get. I get so used to using social media apps that I forget they are actually accessible through the computer. The amount of time I spend on social media is very unhealthy and excessive due to the easy access of the apps on my phone.

Has social media effect my life? Yes, social media has affected my life in a huge way. It has affected me in good and bad ways, which makes me appreciate it and dred its existence at the same time. On one hand, it has helped my become more outgoing, become a better leader, and has helped me make many friends. On the other hand, it has caused me not do school work and procrastinate till the very last minute. Social media and I have a complicated relationship that I am still not sure I love.
